Charles O. Dewey, a Sunset Park middle school, is part of a district-wide effort across Brooklyn to better integrate students. Beyond the challenges of integration itself, the school is facing a change in leadership. Long-time principal, Eric Sackler, who has successfully lead the school for over 13 years, plans to retire. Amanda Bueno, a math and dual language expert for Brooklyn schools, will serve as interim acting principal. Amanda is a graduate from our SBL program, in partnership with the College of St. Rose. This program prepares students to lead through collaboration and a strong vision. Amanda will be well prepared for the task of engaging stakeholders and guiding the school through this change.

The school has rebranded itself as the “School for Diplomacy and International Cooperation,” with a new French program. It plans to add Mandarin next year. One thought is that the diverse the language offerings will attract more diverse the students and families.

Bueno is excited and ready to get to work. “I’ve been thinking a lot about engaging families in a way that all voices feel heard and feel valued, and that some voices don’t overpower others.”
